STYLE RULES
Glow In Your Colours

by Mukui Mbindyo

Hey there Glam Girls!

Welcome back to another week of Style Rules where we talk about how to develop your own great style. If you are just joining us you can catch up on our previous columns, how to take good measurements for great fitting clothes, and how to dress for your body shape.

This week the Style Rule is:

Style Rule # 3
Glow in your colours!

Knowing which colours suit you is another foundational rule of great style. When you are wearing the right colours, they suit your skin perfectly and you just glow. It can be a bit tricky to figure out what colours look good on you. My favourite colour is blue but unfortunately that doesn't look the best on me. I also really love very bright, loud colours (can't run away from my Kamba roots), but then I end up looking like the inside of a bag of skittles and not the put together, sophisticated woman I'm trying to be.

The right colors have nothing to do with outer skin tones. Someone with very fair skin and someone else with darker chocolatey skin may wear the same colors and look great.

The right color is all about your undertone; the color underneath your skin. There are three major undertones: Cool, Warm, and Neutral.

  • Cool undertones are more red, blueish, and pink.
  • Warm undertones are more yellow, gold, and peach.
  • Neutral undertones are a mixture of cool and warm undertones.

There are a few tricks that can help you figure out what your undertone is if you don't already know it.

Now that you have determined your undertone, let's talk about the colors that look best on you.

If you have a warm undertone, choose these types of colors: yellows, oranges, warm reds, and browns.

If you have a cool undertone, choose: blues, greens, purples, blue-based reds, and pinks.

Here is a color chart to help you pick the right colors.

Now that you know he right color for you, you can get to glowing!

Next week we will tackle "To match or Not Match"- The ins and outs of coordinating colors.

Until Then, Glam Girls!
